Three years ago, small businesses in Laguna province didn’t know whether they could still recover from the crippling restrictions imposed by the national government due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Today, however, despite the current uncertainties in the national and global economies, the local economy is once again expected to thrive.

This year has seen the final relaxation of health protocols and restrictions brought by the pandemic, which has also seen a spirit of economic renewal among many businesses here in Laguna.

Along with the resumption of many outlets that were forced to temporarily close or cut down on production due to the pandemic, many business establishments – particularly in the food and service sectors – have sprung up.

Of course, the current “boom” we’re all experiencing has delighted local government units (LGUs), as this means more revenues and funds that can be translated to more programs to benefit the people.

In fact, some LGUs such as Biñan City have passed measures to encourage more businesses to register in their city through perks targeting micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

But there’s really one factor that can mean life or death for many of these small businesses from whom their owners get their everyday living, and that’s the consumers who are sure to spend the holidays on a cycle of “revenge shopping” and “revenge travel.”

This Christmas season, as we finally go back to celebrating the holidays the way we used to before the pandemic struck, let’s prioritize the small local enterprises who are the true backbone of our local economy.

Spending our money on them will be a true holiday gift for these businessmen who have struggled to survive, much less thrive, during the pandemic’s worst moments.
