The Philippines’ reputation as a top consumer of digital media in the Southeast Asian region has created a pressing issue: how to properly dispose of electronic waste such as discarded computers, smartphones, tablets and other electronic components.
According to the environmental group BAN Toxics, the Philippines now stands among the top e-waste producers in Southeast Asia.
From 3.9 kilos per capita in 2019, 537 million kilograms of e-waste were produced in the Philippines in 2022, translating to 4.7 kilos per capita.
One key issue is the lack of appropriate facilities to properly dispose of electronic waste products – an issue the city government of Biñan, Laguna is now aiming to remedy with its “E-Bins.”
Biñan City Mayor-elect Gel Alonte, Vice Mayor-elect Dada Reyes, and Representative-elect Arman Dimaguila led the launching of its “E-Recyclabes Drop Boxes” at the Biñan City Hall last June 2.
The two E-Recyclables Drop Boxes, located at the lobby of the Biñan City Hall, can now be used by visitors to properly dispose of old electronic devices and components such as computers, mobile phones, tablets, and even cables and wiring.
The launch of the “E-Bins” is also part of the city’s partnership with HMR Envirocycle Philippines, a Calamba City-based company focused on recovering, recycling and “upcycling” discarded electronic devices and components.
To recall, the city government of Biñan signed an agreement with HMR Envirocycle Philippines last April 29 that will strengthen its efforts for proper e-waste disposal.
