This year marks the first time in three years that we’ll be able to spend Christmas and New Year’s with family and friends.
After almost three years of isolation, loneliness and uncertainty brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, we’re all ready to once again celebrate the holiday season with the people who matters most to us.
Resorts, hotels, shopping centers, leisure parks are sure to be filled once again with people who, after weathering the economic and social impacts of the pandemic, will be more than willing to spend a day off from the stresses of work and share some quality time just enjoying the holiday spirit.
We’re truly back to what has been called the “old normal.” What has been dubbed the “new normal” – the lockdowns, the health protocols, the restrictions, and all the worries and anxieties brought by the pandemic – now seems to be for most of us a distant nightmare.
And for us, that’s the greatest gift we got – both as individuals and as Filipinos – this coming Christmas. We’ve “made it through the rain,” as a popular song goes.
It goes without saying, however, that there will still be people who will spend Christmas and New Year away from their families, as they fulfill their duties as “frontline” workers.
Let’s also spare a thought (and a gift) to those who are still struggling to provide for their families, three years after the lockdowns and the restrictions all but brought our economy to a virtual standstill.
And most of all, let us bear in mind that Christmas is more than receiving gifts or spending time off with family and friends.
This season, let’s all be “blessed givers” to the people who needed help the most, who are still trying their best to get back on their feet after the pandemic.
