The San Isidro Labrador Church, located at the Binan Town Plaza, is one of the city's most prominent religious and historical sites.

THE famed San Isidro Labrador Church in Binan City, Laguna will soon be elevated to the level of "Diocesan Shrine," the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Pablo City announced January 10.

In a Facebook post, the diocese said its Presbyterian council has approved a petition to "declare the Parochial Church dedicated to Saint Isidore the Farmer in the City of Binan (Ecclesiastical District 1) as the 8th shrine of the Diocese of San Pablo."

Currently, there are seven "Diocesan Shrines" in the Diocese of San Pablo, which covers the province of Laguna: Jesus in the Holy Sepulchre (Landayan, San Pedro City); St. Therese of the Child Jesus (UP Los Banos); San Vicente Ferrer (Mamatid, Cabuyao City); Mary Help of Christians (Don Bosco Seminary, Canlubang, Calamba City); the National Shrine of San Antonio de Padua (Pila); Our Lady of Guadalupe (Pagsanjan): and Our Lady of Turumba (Pakil).

Historical church

The San Isidro Labrador Church, located at the Binan Town Plaza, is one of the city's most prominent religious and historical sites.

The church is dedicated to St. Isidore the Laborer, the patron of farmers who is venerated in the Philippines and especially in Binan, which has been prominent as a marketplace for agricultural products in the province of Laguna.

It houses a century-old image of the said that is said to be miraculous.

The church has been rebuilt several times after numerous natural calamities such as earthquakes and fires.

The present-day structure was constructed after a fire destroyed the church and its adjoining convent in 1968, and was finished two years later in 1970.

The date for the declaration of the church as a Diocesan Shrine is yet to be announced, according to the diocese.
