The city government of Biñan City, Laguna hopes that the new ‘Breast Center’ inside the Ospital ng Biñan will spare Biñanense women of the anxiety and added expenses due to late diagnosis of breast cancer.

Responding to the need for adequate health care facilities for breast cancer patients, the Binan City government launched its “Biñan Breast Center” at the city community hospital today (May 3).

City Mayor Arman Dimaguila, Jr. and his wife, Biñan City Gender and Development Officer Lourdes Dimaguila, led the opening ceremony of the new Breast Center inside the Center for Women’s Health facility at the Ospital ng Biñan (OsBin).

The new facility offers free mammograms for Biñanenses, which will ensure faster detection and prompt treatment for breast cancer.

Leading cause of death

Dr. Melbril Alonte, Medical Director of OsBin, said the creation of the "Breast Center" is vital especially as health experts have warned that breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among Filipinas.

According to the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, one in 13 Filipinas will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also said last February that breast cancer has become the most commonly occurring form of cancer globally.

“Napakahalaga po na ma-detect nang maaga ang breast cancer, dahil almost 50 to 53 percent ng mga nada-diagnose na may cancer, late stage na, nasa dulo na halos,” Dr. Alonte explained.

“Now, with the advent of doing this, [itong project ni] Mayor and Ma’am Des, lahat ng mga kababaihan, yung probability na magkaroon o mag-develop into a cancer, mapapababa natin iyan kung mada-diagnose ng mas maaga,” he added.

Mayor Dimaguila added that with the new free service, Biñan City’s womenfolk will be spared of the anxiety and added expenses due to late diagnosis of breast cancer.

The mayor also pledged additional support for programs that will benefit Biñanense women.
