BFP: Fire inside Santa Cruz market 'arson'

Authorities in Santa Cruz, Laguna are now looking into the motive of the suspect in what it said was the deliberate burning down of the public market in this town last May 23.

A report released by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) last Thursday, May 29, confirmed reports of a “person of interest” in the fire that burned down the dry goods section of the Santa Cruz public market.

According to the report, the BFP Santa Cruz, in cooperation with the Santa Cruz Police Station, have confirmed the identity of the suspect through a review of the CCTV footage of the area before the fire started.

The suspect, whose identity has been withheld as of press time, was later apprehended and has confessed to the crime.

“The suspect…is currently in custody of the law enforcers and is undergoing preliminary investigation at the Prosecutor’s Office to determine his involvement and possible liability in the incident,” the BFP added.

The fire was first reported at around 5:50 in the morning of May 23 and reached a fourth alarm before finally being put out at around 8:20 a.m.

Four individuals, including two fire volunteers and a fireman from the Santa Cruz Fire Station, were injured in the incident.

The fire burned down an estimated P77.56 million worth of goods and property inside the public market, according to the BFP.
