THIS issue marks another new year – and another opportunity for us to be a better person to ourselves, to our families and our community.

And 2022 will be an even more crucial year for us, as Lagunenses and Filipinos: once again, we will exercise that supreme right, privilege and duty as citizens to choose who will lead us for the next three to six years.

Political analysts have opined that the (still raging) Covid-19 pandemic will be a decisive factor in the “winnability” of candidates for the 2022 national and local elections.

Many believe that social media will play a vital role in this upcoming election as “face-to-face” campaign events may be curtailed, depending on how the Philippines will fare under the new variants of the coronavirus.

But more importantly, the pandemic may influence voters’ choices of their leaders, as they have already seen who the “real” leaders are and who are just in it for the power and glory of their positions.

Local and national politics is just warming up, and we still have five months to go before May 9.

Still, it isn’t too early to remind our voters that the leaders we will choose on that day may become the deal-breaker as we recover from a global plague that has had widespread impacts not only on our health but also on our economy and society as a whole.
