Homicide charges are being prepared against two barangay tanods who allegedly beat a curfew violator to death in Calamba City, Laguna.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana said follow-up operations are now being conducted against the two suspects who allegedly fled after the incident

THE Department of Interior and Local Government has urged local enforcers to respect the rights of those apprehended for violations of health protocols.

This, after it announced that two barangay tanods who allegedly mauled to death a quarantine violator in Calamba City will face criminal charges.

The two suspects, identified as Arjay Arbieta and Joel Ortiez, allegedly beat Ernanie Jimenez, who was apprehended after violating curfew hours in Barangay Turbina during the night of April 7.

Arbieta and Ortiez, both members of Barangay Turbina's Quick Response Team (QRT), allegedly kicked Jimenez several times after a brief chase.

The victim was rushed to the Calamba Medical Center where he died due to serious injuries.

"The DILG condemns what happened in Calamba and will ensure that all those responsible will be prosecuted and held accountable for their actions. The Calamba PNP (Philippine National Police) was able to get witness testimony from the relatives of the victim as well as from other individuals and they are preparing the cases to be filed against those responsible who allegedly were members of the Barangay Quick Reaction Team of Barangay Turbina, Calamba," DILG spokesperson Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said in a message.

Malaya said the Calamba Police is just waiting for the issuance of the death certificate of the victim identified as before filing homicide charges against the suspects.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana said follow-up operations are now being conducted against the two suspects who allegedly fled after the incident.

To recall, the police chief of General Trias, Cavite and two other cops were also dismissed last week after an incident where a curfew violator collapsed and died after he was allegedly made to do intense physical exercises by apprehending personnel. (ONT)
