While the announcement doesn't exactly spell out an entirely new theme park, or at least a new area within Universal Studios Japan a la Super Nintendo World, it seems Pokémon will soon make their way into the park in some capacity.
Super Mario and Donkey Kong are not the only characters joining the fun at Universal Studios Japan - it seems Pokémon will also be joining in on the experience.
Universal Studios is not slowing down with their theme park despite the pandemic as Universal announced a partnership with The Pokémon Company last week.
The theme park is anticipated to be innovative and immersive entertainment activations based on the world of Pokémon, which will begin in 2022.
Announced in a press release, the two companies have entered a "long-term partnership" to explore new ways to immerse theme park goers in "groundbreaking entertainment."

"Universal Studios Japan and The Pokémon Company will enter a long-term partnership to jointly explore groundbreaking entertainment that will immerse guests into the world of Pokémon with innovative technology and creativity beginning in 2022," the press release reads.
Given how early this planned date is, it seems unlikely that Pokémon will receive its own themed area the size of Super Nintendo World, and may instead simply have specific rides or attractions within the park.
Earlier this year, the first attraction from the partnership between Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts was opened.
Super Nintendo World offers a slice of the Mushroom Kingdom with a Mario Kart ride, Princess Peach's castle, Yoshi's Snack Island, and even little mini-games to complete across the park.
Since the opening of the Super Nintendo World this year, it has attracted worldwide attention especially the nostalgic feeling of these Nintendo characters coming to life.
Super Nintendo World allows you to experience the game world of Nintendo in a life-size fashion. It reproduces the world of Nintendo's popular characters and games.
