Squid Game, Season 1: Recap Guide

In South Korea, a gripping and harrowing story unfolds as Seong Gi-hun, a middle-aged, divorced father and a struggling gambling addict, is offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to escape his mounting debts and grim reality.

Gi-hun lives with his elderly mother, barely making ends meet while constantly failing to fulfill his responsibilities as a father to his young daughter. His financial troubles are further exacerbated when he learns that his ex-wife plans to move to the United States with their daughter, further motivating him to seek a way out of his dire situation.

One day, after a series of humiliating failures, he encounters a mysterious man at a subway station who invites him to participate in a series of children’s games. The man, impeccably dressed in a suit, challenges Gi-hun to a simple game of ddakji, a traditional Korean paper-flipping game. Each time Gi-hun loses, he endures a slap to the face, but when he finally wins, he receives a small amount of money and a business card with an invitation to join an even bigger competition. The reward? A life-changing amount of money—enough to pay off his debts and turn his life around.

Desperate and enticed by the promise of a brighter future, Gi-hun calls the number on the card and accepts the invitation, setting off a chain of events that will test the very limits of human morality, survival, and greed.

Gi-hun soon finds himself in an undisclosed location alongside 455 other players, all dressed in identical green tracksuits. Like him, they are all drowning in financial despair, burdened by insurmountable debts, and desperate for a way out.

The participants, however, quickly realize that this is no ordinary competition. The games, overseen by the enigmatic "Front Man," are run with militant precision. Masked guards dressed in pink jumpsuits patrol the facility, enforcing strict rules, while the Front Man himself monitors everything from behind a sleek black mask and uniform.

The contestants are placed in a massive, brightly colored dormitory, where they soon learn that their survival is at stake in ways they never imagined. At first, the players are informed that the games are based on traditional children’s activities—simple and nostalgic contests from their youth. However, this illusion of innocence is shattered in the very first game: "Red Light, Green Light." As the players excitedly run toward the finish line, a giant robotic doll scans the field with its eerie, motion-sensitive eyes. Anyone caught moving when the doll says "Red Light" is immediately gunned down.

Panic ensues as contestants realize the horrifying twist: losing a game results in immediate and brutal death. Each player's elimination adds ₩100 million (approximately US$87,400) to the growing prize pool, which totals an astronomical ₩45.6 billion (US$39.86 million). The realization that survival equals wealth plunges the participants into a nightmarish battle of life and death.

Amid the chaos, Gi-hun forms alliances with several key players. Among them are Cho Sang-woo, a childhood friend and former financial prodigy who has fallen from grace due to his unethical dealings; Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector risking everything to reunite her family; Abdul Ali, a kind-hearted migrant worker who seeks a better life for his family; and Oh Il-nam, an elderly man with a brain tumor who appears to be the most vulnerable among them. Together, they navigate the psychological and physical challenges posed by each game, which grow increasingly sinister and cruel.

As trust erodes and desperation mounts, Gi-hun and his allies grapple with impossible choices that force them to confront their morals, fears, and desires. Parallel to the unfolding carnage is the story of Hwang Jun-ho, a determined police detective who infiltrates the deadly games by disguising himself as one of the masked guards. Jun-ho’s goal is deeply personal—he is searching for his missing brother, who he believes may be linked to the games.

His investigation exposes the disturbing inner workings of the operation and reveals shocking truths about the Front Man’s identity and the sinister forces funding the games. As he delves deeper, Jun-ho discovers a twisted hierarchy within the guards and VIP guests—wealthy elites who watch and bet on the deaths of the players as a form of entertainment.

As the games progress, betrayals and moral dilemmas intensify. In one of the most heartbreaking moments, players are paired up for a game of marbles, believing they will work together. Instead, they are forced to compete against each other, leading to gut-wrenching betrayals and tearful goodbyes. The most shocking revelation comes when Gi-hun realizes that Il-nam, the elderly man he had grown close to, was actually the secret mastermind behind the games all along. He had created the deadly competition as a form of entertainment for the ultra-rich, believing that both the players and the wealthy spectators shared the same existential despair—boredom with life itself.
