In 2019 Marvel launched their first superhero movie, Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson. It was however met with countless negative reviews from trolls, most of them men. The film earned $1 billion worldwide.
The movie opened conversations regarding how a female-led superhero film should be and how it can compete with other superhero movies.
Female leads are being scrutinized and are being held to impossibly high standards even though they are only being brought to life now after decades of male-led stories.
DC then released Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey early before the pandemic hit with a whole female gang of misfit anti-heroes led by Quinn.
It earned $200 million worldwide but didn't get enough love from the fans stemming from the unpopularity of its source material.
Movies are not the only ones that are getting female superhero leads. Just this year, Marvel's miniseries WandaVision launched in Disney+ with nine episodes fully powered by the Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff played by Elizabeth Olsen.
Other female-led series announced by Marvel include Hawkeye which is currently filming, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Irornheart.
Looking forward to 2021 and beyond, there are a lot of female superhero films to watch out for.
After Black Widow launching next month, there is DC's The Suicide Squad in August which will feature Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn.
Wanda's story from WandaVision continues on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scheduled for March 2022, we'll also be seeing the rise of a female Thor in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder set for May 2022, the sequel Captain Marvel 2 is also slated for November 2022.
Just as studios are learning how to properly produce female superheroes to finally be the star of their own movies and shows, we as viewers must also learn how to criticize. Our reviews eventually become a demand for stories that these amazing women deserve. (HD)
