CinemaCon announced that prequel to “Hunger Games” for release in November

Lionsgate premiered a teaser for “Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” at the annual trade show for theater owners, CinemaCon yesterday night.

The teaser did not contain any footage from the movie itself as it is currently in production but the teaser started with the text, “You’re invited to return to the Games,” showing scenes of “icy tree branches and eye-catching gold,” and ended with the statement, “The world will discover who is a songbird and who is a snake.”

No characters were shown, leaving the spectators wondering how the cast will be composed. However, Lionsgate announced that the movie will be released in theaters on Nov. 17, 2023.

“Suzanne’s new book has been worth the wait. It offers everything fans could hope for and expect from The Hunger Games while also breaking new ground and introducing an entirely new canvas of characters," said Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, in the announcement.
“The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” takes place decades before the adventures of Katniss Everdeen and centers on young Coriolanus Snow, who eventually becomes the tyrannical president of Panem.

The official synopsis of the prequel reads, “In this return to The Hunger Games, years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he is chosen to be a mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12,” during the 10th Hunger Games.

Francis Lawrence is leading the movie adaptation as the director with Michael Arndt, together with Suzanne Collins and Michael Lesslie, writing the script, as per Variety and will be produced by Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and Lawrence.

Scholastic released Collins’ prequel novel of the same name in May 2020.
