"Leonor Will Never Die," which got the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, is returning to the Philippines' Cinemalaya, where it will stay for good. It will open the Cinemalya on August 5 this year.

Witness the homecoming of a Filipino award-winning movie at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival arriving right in the heartland of a Philippine film event.

"Leonor Will Never Die," a dark comedy project directed by Martika Ramirez Escobar will return to the Philippines where it was shot and will stay here where it truly belongs.

The winner of the Special Jury Prize for Innovative Spirit at the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the illustrious Sundance will be the opening film of the 18th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival on August 5, 2022 at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

"We are all excited to see it," announced Chris Millado, Cinemalaya's Festival Director who recently retired from the Vice Presidency and Artistic Directorship of the CCP but still continues to carry on his artistic mission for the betterment of Philippine society.

"I cannot forsake Cinemalaya," Millado exclaimed.

Meanwhile, according to Martika, "Leonor Will Never Die," a foray into the life of a retired screenwriter who falls into a coma and embodies the supernatural heroism of her screen creation, marks Cinemalaya's opening stint as the start of a series of Philippine screenings of the film.

"Uuwi na ang lola n'yo (Your grandma is going home)," quipped Escobar referring symbolically to the fictitious Leonor as a synecdochal grandma among Filipinos.

In Leonor Will Never Die FB wall, it has a Trivia note: "This is a true homecoming as Leonor was originally a Cinemalaya baby. But alas, the rest is historical revisionism. Whew."
