THE Philippines is surely well represented in Hollywood with megastar Sharon Cuneta about to join the fray.

Famed Kapamilya actress and singer Sharon Cuneta surprised fans with an announcement in her social media account. She posted a screen capture of the post from an American magazine Variety.

“Surprise! Hollywood, here come the Pinoys! Please pray for the project to succeed. My prayer is that it is able to open doors for all of us in the industry—finally!” she wrote on Instagram.

The Filipino-Canadian filmmaker Martin Edrain is set to direct the film, who was the creator of SXSW-winning feature “Island'' which tackles migration issues.

While Rae Red is the one adapting the novel to a screenplay. Red is also the writer behind the film “Babae at Baril.”

Cuneta is set to play the main character and also tasked to produce the feature film adaptation. “The Mango Bride” written by Marivi Soliven published in 2013 in English by Penguin Random House, in Filipino by National Book Store and in Spanish by Grupo Planeta. The novel won the highest literary prize in the Philippines – the Grand Prize of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards.

“I wanted to do The Mango Bride because it’s the best way to connect to a global audience by putting some of the best Filipino talents and stories together to tell an emotional and uplifting story like this.” Cuneta said in a statement.“I have long been a fan of Marivi Soliven’s writing, from ‘Suddenly Stateside’, her collection of light essays about living in the US, to ‘The Mango Bride’. She captures the Filipino migrant and Filipino American experience skillfully.”

The book chronicles revolves around two Filipino women. Amparo, a quiet socialite born into a wealthy family, and Beverly, a wide-eyed mail-order bride – who migrated to California and discover hidden truths as their lives intertwine.

Production is set to begin in late 2022 on the feature film from Singapore and London-headquartered IP firm 108 Media and Los Angeles-based Bold MP.
