The fact that Studio Ghibli shared the image on their official Twitter account, and with no caption whatsoever, had fans clamoring to determine whether this was a cryptic message alluding to a possible upcoming collaboration between the two animation powerhouses.
TALKS about a Pixar and Studio Ghibli collaboration continue to develop.
This comes after the latter posted artwork pieces on social media, featuring characters from their respective studios.
Published with no caption, it's unclear whether the tweet is a hint at a potential collaboration with Pixar, or simply an affectionate nod to the animation powerhouse.
It wouldn't be the first time the worlds of Pixar and Studio Ghibli have collided – fans might remember that Totoro had a cameo appearance in Toy Story 3.
Comic Book reported that the latest material recreates the iconic scene from My Neighbor Totoro, wherein the titular character stands under the rain beside Mei and Satsuki.
But instead of the two children, the artwork features Monsters Inc.'s Mike and Sulley.
They're two of the most famous animation studios in the world, albeit with entirely different styles.
Studio Ghibli is famous for its traditional, hand-drawn illustrations, while Pixar is the king of CGI world-building.
But if a cryptic tweet from the former is anything to go by, they might be about to join forces.
Studio Ghibli took to Twitter to post a drawing showing a scene from its 1988 hit classic My Neighbour Totoro, adapted to feature Michael “Mike” Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan of Monsters, Inc. fame.
The artist behind the Ghibli-Pixar crossover has yet to be named.
The work was previously seen hanging at Studio Ghibli’s offices in Tokyo, pictured in an anime industry documentary broadcast in Japan on NHK in December 2019.
The fact that Studio Ghibli shared the image on their official Twitter account, and with no caption whatsoever, had fans clamouring to determine whether this was a cryptic message alluding to a possible upcoming collaboration between the two animation powerhouses.
Both companies have yet to break their silence regarding the matter.
Accordingly, no one knows why My Neighbor Totoro's creators released such material on social media.
Nevertheless, netizens are seemingly hoping for a joint project between the two big names in the animation sector in the future.
Stay tuned for updates if we’ll see a collaboration between these two animation giants in the near future. (NP)
