“On the Job: The Missing 8” by Erik Matti shortlisted as the Philippines’ entry for the Emmys and now also submitted for the Oscars
“On the Job: The Missing 8,” by the acclaimed director Erik Matti has been chosen as the Philippines entry in the upcoming 95th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, as announced by the Film Development Council of the Philippines via its Facebook page yesterday, Sept. 30.
The film was submitted for the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards, which was announced by the FDCP and the Directors Guild of the Philippines Inc.
“The 95th Academy Awards Best International Feature Film may be ours this year. Congratulations to the Philippine entry to the Oscar Awards, ‘On the Job: The Missing 8’ directed by Erik Matti,” it stated.
The announcement came a day after the 2022 mini-series edit of the original 2013 film was nominated for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series at the 50th International Emmy Awards.
“On the Job,” premiered in September 2021 at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, starring John Arcilla who was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, the first Filipino to do so.
"The Missing 8" follows Sisoy Salas (Arcills), a journalist investigating the mysterious disappearances of his colleague and temporarily released prisoner portrayed by Dennis Trillo falling into a gun-for-hire business.
Joining the star-studded cast are Christopher de Leon, Leo Martinez, Joey Marquez, Vandolph Quizon, Agot Isidro, Eric Fructuoso and Soliman Cruz.
"The Missing 8" finds itself amongst international films such as South Korea's "Decision to Leave," Mexico's "Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths" and Germany's "All Quiet on the Western Front" in making the shortlist and final cut for Best International Feature Film.
This will be the Philippines’ first entry for the Academy Awards in two years after Brillante Mendoza's "Mindanao" in 2020.
