Oh Yeong-su from Netflix’ “Squid Game” has been indicted for sexual misconduct that happened in 2017.
Oh Yeong-su, star of the Netflix hit-series “Squid Game” who recently won a Golden Globe for his portrayal in the series was indicted for sexual charges, according to judicial officials yesterday.
A report from Yonhap News Agency revealed that the Suwon District Prosecutor's Office Seongnam branch charged Oh a day prior without detention.
According to the reports, Oh was questioned over an allegation that he had inappropriately touched a woman in 2017 who filed an official complaint against Oh in December 2021.
The police said that their office forwarded the related documents with the opinion of indictment to higher authorities in February 2022, then a supplementary investigation took place and decided not to push through in April 2022 after interviewing witnesses and asking for the lawyers’ opinions.
An appeal was made by the victim after the police’s decision of closing the case and their office has been reinvestigating since as reported by the Korean media outlet Soompi.
JTBC then shared a statement by Oh regarding the incident saying: “I just held her hand to guide the way around the lake. I apologized because [the person] said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it but it doesn’t mean that I admit the charges.”
However, despite Oh denying all of the accusations since the case was first opened in late 2021, the prosecution stated that it has obtained sufficient evidence of harassment against the victim and will be taking the case to trial but is unclear whether Oh will appear in court and when the trial might take place.
Agence France Presse quoted a Suwon court official who claimed that “everything reported by local media is not factually correct.”
Following the charge, local reports said that Seoul's culture ministry decided to stop broadcasting a government commercial featuring Oh about its regulatory innovation.
