Fans of “Superstar” Nora Aunor in Japan were disappointed when they learned that the actress wouldn't be around during an awarding that would recognize her contributions to the growth and development Philippine cinema.
But what could they do when her health was at stake?
Just the same, though, the 7th World Class Excellence Japan Award went on without her.
"Hindi po ako pinayagan ng doktor ko na magbiyahe dahil sa kalusugan ko. Humihingi po ako ng paumanhin at pang-unawa sa nag-abang sa akin (I was not permitted by my doktor to travel because of my health condition. I apologize and I ask for understanding from those who wanted me there)," said Nora in our online conversation when I texted her if she was already in Japan a few days before the event.
In April this year, Aunor had officially announced that she'd go to Japan to personally receive an award from the 7th World Class Excellence Japan Award (WCEJA).
The organizer of the award, Philippine singer Emma Cordero, was overjoyed when Nora confirmed her appearance at the New Otani Hotel in Fukuoka, Japan.
"It is an honor to be regalled by the presence of Ms. Nora Aunor. It would be history," said Emma.
According to Ate (a term of endearment to an older sister by blood or by affinity) Guy, it was as if she was also around during the awarding because of her proxy.
"Nandoon naman po si John Rendez dahil awardee rin po siya (Anyway, he was there because he was also an awardee)," informed La Aunor.
It was John Rendez who accepted the award on behalf of the National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts.
