'Squid Game’ season 2 officially underway after Netflix released a teaser

Netflix officially announces the return of the global-hit series ‘Squid Game’ for a second season along with a message from creator, writer, director and executive producer Hwang Dong-Hyuk on Sunday, confirming the return of familiar characters and a new but ever-deadly doll.

“Red light… GREENLIGHT!” reads the message alongside the teaser.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” said the statement from director Hwang. “As the writer, director and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout- out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”

Included in director Hwang’s statement is the revelation of the return of protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and the masked antagonist the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun).

“The man in the suit with ddakji might be back,” Hwang teased, then continued to introduce the boyfriend of Young-hee, the gigantic doll killer who is now off the market, Cheol-su for more tension while the games begin.

"Join us once more for a whole new round," the statement concludes.

After the huge success of the first season, Hwang hinted at a second season just weeks after the peak of the series in which Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos backed by officially confirming more episodes were on the way in January.

"There's been so much demand, love and attention for a season two," he said. "So I feel I have no choice but to make a season two."

Netflix did not disclose the release date of the second installment of the show, however, Hwang previously estimated that it will likely be premiering near the end of 2023 or the start of 2024.
