National Artists encourage nominations for 2025 awarding

Arts managers and some National Artists in the country gathered together Thursday afternoon at the Leandro V. Locsin Theater of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in Intramuros to announce the calls for nominations to the Order of National Artist for 2025.

Three of the National Artists led the nomination rounds of ONA which ends on June 30, 2024.

National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes, National Artist for Literature Gemino Abad and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee encouraged and enjoined their fellow artists to submit their nominations for their respective arts divisions.

This time though, according to Victorino Mapa Manalo, Chairperson of the NCCA, submissions must be done by a nominating group or organization.

"Individual nominations are not accepted anymore," clarified Manalo.

Meanwhile, Jaime Laya, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) emphasized the importance of the commitment of artists to nation-building and the rigorous process nominees would go through in the monitoring and deliberation stages of the search.

In her opening remarks, CCP President Michelle Nikki Junia stressed the challenging roles of future National Artists must play in the local and international representations of Filipino artists and their works.

Criteria

The ONA shall be given to artists who have met the following criteria: living artists who are Filipino citizens at the time of nomination and at the awarding, as well as those who died after the establishment of the award in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at the time of their death; artists who through the content and form of their works have contributed a Filipino sense of nationhood; artists who have pioneered in a mode if creative expression or style, thus, earning distinction and making an impact om succeeding generations of artists; artists who have created substantial and significant body of works and/or consistently displayed excellence in the practice of their artform, thus, enriching artistic expression or style, and artists who enjoy broad acceptance through prestigious national and/or international recognition such as the Gawad CCP para sa Sining, CCP Thirteen Artists Award and NCCA Haraya Award (Alab ng Dangal), critical acclaim and/or reviews of their works, and respect and esteem from peers.

ONA is a joint partnership of NCCA and CCP.

Nominations for the ONA may be submitted by government ir non-government cultural organizations and educational institutions, as well as private foundations and councils.
