The upcoming MMFF film “My Father, Myself,” which includes homosexual and incest themes is definitely stirring conversations online regarding its appropriateness.

It’s the time of the year again where the brightest stars show their top-caliber acting and where screenwriters show their knack in telling stories for the world to enjoy in the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

One upcoming movie starring Jake Cuenca and Sean de Guzman entitled “My Father, Myself” directed by Joel Lamangan piqued the audience’s interest through social media posts after the trailer of the movie was made public ahead of the opening of the film festival.

In the trailer, Cuenca can be seen kissing costar de Guzman, a younger man who is supposedly playing his adopted son, and as the trailer went on, it was revealed that Cuenca’s character became sexually attracted to Sean while he impregnates his stepsister in the movie.

“We’re thankful for the conversation,” claimed Cuenca after learning of the buzz that his film is creating on the internet, reported Inquirer.
“At the end of the day, that’s what we really want—for the movie to be hyped. For me, it’s more painful if no one talks about the movie at all.”

According to netizens, the film went too far and crossed the line between wanting to be talked about for intellectual exchange and being yet another controversial piece that aims to create noise just for the sake of exposure.

“I can’t believe that my own father is having an affair with my boyfriend,” is the exact line that made the wrong impression to most of the people who saw the trailer.

Meanwhile, a smaller group of people stood up for the movie and compared its plot to the growing popularity of the BL genre or boys’ love that has been taking the Asian market by storm.

Sean also admitted to getting hurt by some of the negative comments that the film was getting even before premiering the film for the holiday film festival.

“Some said, aren’t MMFF entries supposed to be happy and not controversial? It’s sad because they judge the entire movie based on what they saw from its trailer,” de Guzman said in an interview.
“I’m proud to be part of this film, to have had the opportunity to work with Direk Joel and all my amazing coactors. I just wish people will give the movie a chance.”
