J.E Tiglao’s “Metamorphosis” recognized as Best Feature in the recently concluded LGBTQIA+ film festival Iris Prize at Cardiff, Wales.
Filipino film “Metamorphosis”—the first Filipino movie about intersex—won at the 2022 Iris Prize Festival, a queer film fest recognized by the British Academy Film Awards, held on October 11 to 16 at Cardiff, Wales.
“Metamorphosis” bagged the award for Best Feature, while lead star Good Aceron—who played Adam in the movie—claimed the award for Best Performance in a Role Beyond the Binary.
J.E. Tiglao, director of the film, made the announcement on social media on Wednesday, October 19.
“WE WON BEST FILM IN UK! And Gold Aceron won the very first Best Performance in a role Beyond Binary! We won at the Cardiff’s Iris Prize, an A-list BAFTA qualifying festival and one of the leading queer film festivals in UK,” wrote Tiglao in his post.
Additionally, according to Tiglao, Aceron is the first actor to win the award as it was a newly- added category in the Iris Prize Festival.
The film follows the story of Adam, raised as a normal boy who happens to have both male and female genitalia and then experiences his first “dalaw” of menstruation.
Adam then goes through a phase of confusion and distress in his road of discovery as an intersex individual.
Originally produced by Rebelde Films, “Metamorphosis” debuted at the 15th Cinema One Original Festival in 2019 and has been receiving awards and nominations locally from left to right, including Best Cinematography (C1 Originals 2019), Yayo Aguila for best-supporting actress Gawad Urian 2019 winner; and Tiglao, best direction, Gawad Urian 2019 nominee.
Aceron can be seen in the recently released film by director Mac Alejandre called “May-December-January,” which follows a single mom and a career woman with a gay son and are both in love with the same young man.
The film will be competing at the Asian Film Festival in Barcelona, Spain in December.
