It was late in the afternoon yesterday when iconic fashion designer Albert Figueras had asked actress Max Eigenmann online if the news was true that Cherie Gil was dead.

Napa-what agad si Max (She loudly exclaimed what),” informed Albert who was earlier fitting Max of the four pieces of gown he made for her. “Tapos, hindi na siya sumagot (Then, she didn’t answer anymore),” added the haute couture expert.

When Figueras wanted to confirm the news, he said that Max didn’t answer anymore. Eigenmann is one of Cherie’s nieces.

In a few moments, Max’s brother, actor Sid Lucera had confirmed the death of her aunt. According to actress Annabelle Rama, Cherie died at 5 p.m. Philippine time.

Earlier this year, Gil bid showbiz adieu as she wanted to start her life all over again and to live with her children in New York.

It turned out Cherie was stricken with cancer.

In her Instagram, Sharon Cuneta noted that she flew away to a far place from California to visit a very sick friend. At the time and until this moment, Sharon is still in the US. Showbiz insiders said it was Cherie whom Cuneta was referring to.

Gil was 59.
