First off, actor and politician Arjo Atayde has Visayan blood.
Why so?
Arjo's mom, actress Sylvia Sanchez, Josette Campo in real life, hails from Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.
Not only his roots fit exposure into this paper but his newsworthiness as well.
Atayde was one of the 17 lawmakers, recently named by couple Pacifico and Sarah Discaya, who has received kickbacks from their flood control projects with the Department of Publuc Works and Highways (DPWH).
When the revelation was made by Curlee Discaya, the pet name of Pacifico at the Senate hearing, Arjo's wife Maine Mendoza immediately came to his rescue.
Arjo is the congressman of the First District of Quezon City.
"Teka lang muna (Hold it first), those accusations are baseless," Maine remonstrated.
According to Mendoza, whose career rose when she played Yaya Dub in the "kalye serye" TV skit in the noontime variety show "Eat Bulaga," her husband is not capable of doing corruption in government.
In her latest statement, she noted: "I will never accept the narrative that accuses us of stealing and living off taxpayers’ money. That is not who Arjo is, that is not who I am, and that is not who we are—no amount of noise and accusations will ever make it true. And if Arjo ever did anything dishonest, if he were truly guilty, I certainly wouldn’t defend him and cover for him. Accuse him of other things if you wish, but not of stealing from people—that is one line he has never crossed, and never will."
