Set to be hitting the theaters on May 26, 2023, “The Little Mermaid” live-action film will take on Disney’s 1989 animated musical classic.
After making the official announcement last July, Disney’s Live-Action film ‘The Little Mermaid’ finally gets an official release date.
Set to be hitting the theaters on May 26, 2023, “The Little Mermaid” live-action film will take on Disney’s 1989 animated musical classic.
This remake is a part of the Mickey Mouse company’s mysterious 2023 and 2024 lineup.
In addition to The Little Mermaid, four Marvel titles are set to premiere in 2024, as well as two Pixar films.
In addition to Halle Bailey as Ariel, it also stars Javier Bardem as King Triton, Melissa McCarthy as the wicked Ursula, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.
Production started in 2020 and was originally based in London, but had to be pushed back during the Covid-19 pandemic, which Bailey said "caused everyone to slow down.”
Bailey is half of the five-time Grammy-nominated singing duo Chloe x Halle, so there are likely to be some strong vocal performances in The Little Mermaid.
The movie is set to be the 21-year-old's first major role and many are excited to see her debut as the iconic Disney princess, alongside such a star-studded cast.
Rob Marshall is directing live-action “The Little Mermaid” with a script by Jane Goldman.
The original “Little Mermaid” film was released in 1989, based on the 1837 Danish fairytale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. It was written and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman.
The Walt Disney Company also recently announced that a live-action adaptation of Snow White is currently in the very early stages of pre-production, with “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler set to star as the titular character.
Few further details have been provided at this time, but filming should begin early next year.
