Cube Entertainment announced that LIGHTSUM members Huiyeon and Jian will be leaving the group just a year after its debut.

Huiyeon and Jian of South Korean girl group LIGHTSUM will leave the group, a year after debuting in the music scene, as announced by their agency on October 25.

Cube Entertainment released a statement regarding the departure of the girls from the group saying:

“First of all, we sincerely apologize for this sudden news for those fans who always send love and support to Lightsum.”
"After a careful discussion, we have decided to reorganize LIGHTSUM as a 6-member group (Sangah, Chowon, Nayoung, Hina, Juhyeon, Yujeong) for their future promotions, and we will provide our unlimited support and best efforts for LIGHTSUM to continue on with their music."

Aside from the announcement, details as to why the two members were leaving were not explained.

“Also, please send support for Huiyeon and Jian who are no longer able to join,” Cube Entertainment said.

K-netizens were not pleased with the sudden announcement of the drastic change within the group, alleging that the agency seemed to have kicked out the members and did not treat them fairly if this was the reason for their departure.

LIGHTSUM debuted as an eight-piece group in June 2021 with the album “Vanilla,” and more recently released their first mini-album “Into the Light” in May 2022 which carries the title track “ALIVE.”

Members Chowon, Nayoung and Yujeong were featured in Mnet's K-pop audition program "Produce 48" (2018).

The group was Cube’s first new girl group in three years, following the debut of (G)I-DLE in 2018, and is known to handle other k-pop acts such as BTOB, Pentagon, and soloist Jo Kwon.

LIGHTSUM’s media showcase for their first EP “Into the Light,” was the group’s first in-person media event due to the fact that they debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic social distancing has been alleviated and we’re now able to hold a concert in the presence of our fans,” Nayoung said. “We’re looking forward to performing to the cheers of our fans.”
