Days ago, netizen Ramon Jaramillo (strangely a namesake of the late entertainment writer Ramon “Monching” Jaramillo of the former Graphic Arts Services or GASI, Inc., a giant publishing company of the defunct fanzines Kislap, Intrigue, Movie Flash, among others) posted in his Facebook wall an item from Herencia Hispanofilipina, Melbourne-based Facebook page, that Ryan Gosling's great, great grandfather is a Filipino named Ramon Gonzales y Catanduanes who hailed from Nasugbu, Batangas.
According to the account, reprinted in the online publication The Adobo Chronicles, Ramon was born in 1878 to an admiral of the Spanish navy and a Filipino woman who belonged to a middle class from Nasugbu.
His paternal family is said to have descended from the Habsburg family.
It also described Ramon as a fan of theater and dance and later a gifted performer of these arts during his teens.
Furthermore, according to the report, when Filipino revolutionaries took over the reign of the government, Ramon's family migrated to Canada.
It added that in 1900, Ramon married Jean-Marie Gonzales nee Polnareff.
Nothing was known, it is said, of the Gonzales-Polnareff until November 12, 1980, when Ramon's great, great grandson Ryan Thomas Gosling was born in Ontario, Canada.
Herencia Hispanofilipina observed that the Hollywood actor looks identical to his great, great grandfather Ramon as he is also a fan of theater and dance.
Ryan has several films under his belt, some of them noteworthy like “Drive” (2011), “La La Land” (2016), “Blade Runner 2049” (2017), etc.
Ryan is a major Oscar contender this year for the Best Supporting Actor Plum for “Barbie” (2023).
Could Ryan be one of us Filipinos?
There are contentions, though.
While Jaramillo just reposted the post and some others believe in it like netizens Reynante Lorica (“This picture is a Young Ryan Gosling”), Robert John M. Gunabe (“he is a Canadian of Filipino Descent,” “Resemblance”), Jesus Tanghal (“He is a carbon copy of his Great Grandpa”) etc. some debunk the story like Ronnie Cruz (“This is a fake photo/portrait. It’s digitally altered to give it a faded and vintage look”), Dolf Rivera (“source?” “Ronnie Cruz daming naniniwala sa (many believe in the) post” “He is of roughly half French-Canadian ancestry (from both of his parents combined), along with English, Scottish, Irish, and about 1/32 German. The Gosling surname originates in England where Ryan’s great-great-grandfather, George Edward Gosling, was born in Paddington).
That’s why The Adobo Chronicles, and OpinYon Batangas, requested: “We’d love to hear from Ryan or his family!”
