Tomb Raider (2013 video game)
Lara Croft embarks on her first expedition aboard the research vessel Endurance, determined to uncover the mysteries surrounding the lost kingdom of Yamatai. The expedition, led by Dr. James Whitman, takes a bold turn when Lara suggests navigating into the Dragon’s Triangle, a perilous region off the coast of Japan known for its mysterious disappearances. Though Whitman opposes the idea, Lara’s theory is compelling enough that the team proceeds—only to be caught in a violent, supernatural storm that rips the ship apart and strands the survivors on a remote, uncharted island.
Separated from her companions and with no weapons or experience in survival, Lara is immediately forced into a brutal reality. She awakens trapped in a strange cave, suspended upside down, and narrowly escapes after setting the cave ablaze and evading a crazed attacker. Injured and alone, she must fend for herself in the island’s harsh wilderness.
As she begins locating other survivors, it becomes clear the island is not deserted. Strange shrines, wreckage from various time periods, and signs of human activity suggest a long and haunted history. Lara reunites with her friend Sam Nishimura, who is being accompanied by a mysterious man named Mathias. Sam begins telling him about the legends of Queen Himiko, the ancient ruler of Yamatai, but Lara suddenly faints. When she regains consciousness, Sam and Mathias are missing.
Lara manages to regroup with other survivors: Roth, her mentor; Reyes, the ship’s mechanic; Jonah, a gentle giant and loyal friend; tech expert Alex; and Grim, the grizzled helmsman. With Roth still missing, Lara teams up with Whitman to search for him while the others set out to find Sam. During their trek, Lara and Whitman discover unsettling signs that the island is home to a fanatical cult. They are soon captured by the island’s violent inhabitants and taken to a fortress-like settlement where other survivors are being held.
Amid a chaotic escape attempt, Lara is separated once more and forced to defend herself, killing a man for the first time in her life. Traumatized but resolute, she eventually finds Roth, who has been injured in the struggle. He entrusts Lara with his climbing axe and gear and sends her to ascend a massive radio tower to call for help.
Despite the harsh climb, Lara successfully repairs the transmitter and sends out a distress signal. A rescue plane soon appears, but before it can land, a supernatural storm conjures out of nowhere and crashes it. The pilot parachutes to safety, but Lara is unable to stop the cultists—revealed to be the Solarii Brotherhood—from killing him.
Through radio contact, Lara learns that Sam has been captured by the Solarii, and worse, Mathias is their leader. Intent on using Sam in some dark ritual, the cult believes her to be the key to resurrecting Queen Himiko. Lara tries to intervene but is overpowered. She is saved at the last second by a massive warrior—one of the ancient "Oni" samurai—who brings her to a sacred monastery hidden high in the mountains.
Escaping the monastery’s dungeons, Lara uncovers the truth behind the cult's obsession. In a ritual chamber, she learns of the ancient ceremony known as the "Ascension," where Himiko’s soul is passed into a new body. The process is fatal to the host if they are not chosen. Sam, it seems, is the latest candidate. A panicked Sam manages to radio Lara and pleads for help.
Determined, Lara storms the Solarii’s main fortress. Grim helps her infiltrate but is killed during the assault. With Roth’s help, she reaches the inner palace where she sees Mathias beginning the ritual. As Sam is engulfed in flames, a sudden wind snuffs them out—an apparent sign she has been chosen by Himiko’s spirit.
Mathias orders Lara captured again, but she escapes. Meanwhile, the others attempt to mount their own rescue. Whitman reappears, claiming he has been negotiating with the Solarii, and helps Lara return to the palace. Roth hijacks a helicopter to evacuate the team. However, as another storm rapidly forms, Lara insists they cannot leave by air. Despite her warnings, the pilot takes off, and lightning brings the helicopter down. Lara survives the crash, but Roth is killed by Mathias while protecting her.
Racked with grief and now convinced the storms are supernatural defenses tied to Himiko’s spirit, Lara resolves to end the cycle. She reunites with Reyes, Jonah, and the rest, who have secured a boat for escape. They still need tools to fix it, so Lara heads to the wreck of the Endurance to retrieve them. There, she finds Alex pinned under debris. When Solarii cultists close in, Alex sacrifices himself, urging Lara to save herself and take the tools.
Piecing together notes from a long-abandoned Japanese military expedition, Lara learns that the storms are magical and originate from Himiko herself. The last general of the Stormguard took his own life after failing to contain her power. The truth is chilling—Himiko’s soul has never left her body, because her final successor chose death over possession. Now, Himiko’s spirit remains trapped in a decaying corpse, desperate to find a new host. Sam’s role in the ritual is not symbolic—Mathias intends to use her to revive the Sun Queen.
Lara races back to warn the others, only to discover Whitman has betrayed them. Obsessed with fame and discovery, he delivers Sam to Mathias. Lara, Jonah, and Reyes follow in pursuit. As they reach the monastery, the Oni—ancient guardians of Himiko—slay Whitman, revealing they protect the queen from interference, not serve her.
Fighting her way through the decaying remains of the monastery and its ancient protectors, Lara reaches the inner sanctum as the final Ascension ritual begins. She battles Mathias and the last of his followers in a brutal confrontation. Using her signature dual pistols, she kills Mathias and rushes to destroy Himiko’s corpse before the spirit can complete its possession of Sam.
With Himiko’s body incinerated, the storms vanish. The magic imprisoning them has ended. Lara rescues Sam and they regroup with the others. Finally free from the cursed island, they are rescued by a passing cargo ship.
As they sail away, exhausted and forever changed, Lara gazes into the distance. This harrowing ordeal has transformed her from a reluctant adventurer into a hardened survivor. The myths she once studied in books are real—and she vows this is just the beginning. Lara Croft will not be returning home. Not yet. There are more secrets out there. And now, she’s ready to uncover them.
