Disney has unveiled an official lightsaber that automatically lights up and extends just like in the “Star Wars” movies.

ON May 4th, dubbed as Star Wars Day after the quote, “May the force/ fourth be with you”, Disney unveiled to fans an official lightsaber that automatically lights up and extends just like in the movies.

While this official lightsaber cannot cut hands and deflect blaster fire, it is Disney’s official prop for the cast members of the soon to open Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience at Walt Disney World in Florida.

s for its development, Disney says, "Yes, that's a new type of lightsaber Rey is holding in her hand, created by Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development."

The company has not commented on questions if the lightsaber will be available for sale.

Currently, the commercially available official merchandise lightsabers involve retracting plastic tubes or a plastic tube with LED inside.

More dedicated fans, on the other hand, would create their own with rigid fiberglass that cannot retract.

Judging only from the one video Disney dropped, this new lightsaber has bright movie-accurate LED lighting and retractability straight from the hilt.

A trustworthy source, developer Ben Ridout’s assessment of Disney’s 2018 patent, claims that the lightsaber works using a “retractable, internally illuminated blade” similar to an industrial measuring tape.

If the new saber follows the 2018 design, the saber might not be sturdy enough to withstand a clash against another lightsaber as they do in the films but we are likely to find out when the new attraction opens in Disney World in 2022.

Star Wars fans in the Philippines are known for performing battles with fiberglass lightsabers and raising money for charity.

The Lightsaber Philippines appeared last month on the GMA show, Catch Me Out PH and raised funds for Tiny Blessings Foundation.

Another Star Wars fan group in the country called the 501st Cebu Scarif Garrison celebrated Star Wars Day by opening a community pantry for 44 families who survived the fire in District 4, Barangay Pulpogan in Consolacion, Cebu.

The fans cosplayed as Star Wars characters and even had themed signages for reminding people to maintain social distancing.

Whether or not Disney’s official lightsaber will only be a Disney World prop or be commercially available, Star Wars fans will find a way to make their own, cosplay, and spread positivity because they “do or do not. There is no try.” (HD)
