The news of Demi Lovato being non-binary comes months after their interview with Glamour, where they shared they’d come to a big revelation about their identity that they were choosing to keep private for the time being.
“I am proud.”
Demi Lovato has announced they identify as non-binary and will use they/them pronouns.
The singer and actor publicly came out on Instagram, explaining that discovering their identity “has come after a lot of healing [and] self-reflective work.”
“Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all — I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary,” Lovato announced, adding that they will “officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”
They said the gender-neutral pronouns “best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression,” and wanted to come forward to help people who “haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones.”
Mixture of two genders
Christy L. Olezeski, PhD, director of Yale Medicine’s Gender Program, definesnon-binary as a term used to identify a person who does not identify within the gender binary (male or female),
"Essentially, non-binary—sometimes shortened to NB or enby—is a type of gender identity. “Some individuals do not identify as male or female, but as a mixture of the two—something other than male or female or with no gender at all,” she says.
“Some folk have an identity that fluctuates over time,” she added.
The news of Lovato being non-binary comes months after their interview with Glamour, where they shared they’d come to a big revelation about their identity that they were choosing to keep private for the time being.
“I know who I am and what I am, but I’m just waiting until a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am,” they said. “I’m following my healers’ timeline, and I’m using this time to really study and educate myself on my journey and what I’m preparing to do.”
Struggles
Lovato was most recently the subject of a YouTube documentary, Dancing with the Devil, titled after their latest album. The four-part series delved into Lovato’s struggles with addiction, as well as their past trauma.
In March, Lovato came out as pansexual in an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, during which they discussed their queer identity and gender fluidity.
When Lovato suffered a near-fatal overdose in 2018, the star shared they believe it was due, in part, to the lack of authenticity in their identity.
"I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists or team members or even fans who wanted me to be the sexy, feminine pop star in the leotard and look a certain way," they explained.
"I thought that was what I was supposed to be. Now I just realize it's so much more important to live your truth than to ever suppress yourself because that's the type of stuff that happens when you do."
