Angelina Jolie officially joined the social media world through Instagram with a very powerful message.
The Hollywood leading lady-turned-humanitarian garnered more than 5.1 million followers in less than 24 hours after joining the social media platform. She is now hailed as the fastest Instagram user to gain 1 million followers.
Jolie gained 2.1 million new followers in just three hours, which beat David Attenborough’s four hours 44 minutes.
The actress, however, was not in it for the metrics – she tapped into social media for a much more meaningful purpose.
The actress chose her first post to be related to the latest Afghanistan issues, due to a message she received from a girl from Afghanistan.
She shared her experience of being on the border of Afghanistan before the September 11 attacks 20 years ago,
"where I met refugees who had fled the Taliban."
The letter contained the girl’s fears over women’s rights once again being stripped amid the Taliban’s takeover of the country’s government.
“This is a message sent to me by a teenage girl in Afghanistan.. Currently, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate through social media and express themselves freely.. I have come to Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those struggling with for fundamental human rights around the world,” Jolie shared in the caption.

"It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country. To spend so much time and money, to have blood shed and lives lost only to come to this, is a failure almost impossible to understand," she added.
Jolie expressed her commitment to help.
"I will not turn away. I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you will join me," she said.
