Erika Casupanan is the first Canadian and first person of Filipino descent to win Survivor, and the first woman to win since Sarah Lacina won “Survivor: Game Changers.”
The reality television show “Survivor 41” ended with a relatively standard finale that set a record and broke a long streak.
Erika Casupanan is the first Canadian and first person of Filipino descent to win Survivor, and the first woman to win since Sarah Lacina won “Survivor: Game Changers.”
Over the previous 15 seasons of Survivor, 12 of the winners have been men.
She immediately tweeted this broken streak in her Twitter account: “I must be a witch bc I just broke a curse #survivor#survivor41.”
Casupanan won with a commanding 7-1-0 vote of the jury.
But her win may be somewhat surprising because the editing this season failed her.
“Survivor 41” did Erika a major disservice by highlighting her far, far less than the other two finalists, which is just another way in which “Survivor” failed this season.
She won the US$1-million prize, beating out four other finalists to be crowned the season’s Survivor.
The 32-year-old was born in the Philippines but moved to Toronto at a young age.
She worked as a communications manager and has a degree in Media, Information, and Technoculture, and a diploma in Multimedia Design & Production. Casupanan also has a post-graduate certificate in Public Relations.
Going by her bio from the show, Casupanan was quite confident about making it to the game’s end. She said:
“I've been manipulative since before I knew what manipulation was. I relentlessly pursue my dreams. The great thing is no one would expect it because of my youthful face and small stature. I can make it to the end and am confident in my ability to advocate for myself at final tribal.”
