“Radio Drama Queen” Ester Chavez passed away at the age of 93, after a multi-faceted career in film, television and radio that spanned decades.

The local entertainment industry is mourning anew after veteran character actress Ester Chavez recently passed away Sunday (June 6) due to multiple organ failure.

She was 93 years old.

In entertainment writer Mell Navarro’s social media posts, he quoted Ester’s daughter-in-law Boots Misa Chavez: “She was a true professional and looked forward to each call with enthusiasm. She was so humble. She was always surprised when the public recognizes her.

"Everyone called her 'Mommy Ester'. She always had a friendly demeanor. Very approachable and warm. I accompanied her once when she had to fly to Ilocos for a shoot with then young and promising actor, Christopher de Leon.

“Among her remarkable works as a superb character actress include ‘Kung Mahawi Man Ang Ulap’ (1984), ‘Guhit ng Palad’ (1988), ‘Orapronobis’ (1989), ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’ (1991), plus many other titles. She was a radio giant over DZRH and other radio stations the past decades.”

Ester, who started her radio career at 17, was soon dubbed the “Queen of Filipino Radio Drama.”

She was best known for her Aling Chayong character on the radio drama “Ilaw ng Tahanan.”

Ester is survived by her two sons, Armando and Andrew.
