When the pandemic eases up, 20 films from the 2020 and 2021 Cinemalaya Festival will be shown in the 18th Cinemalaya Festival while other activities will include free online scriptwriting, according to Cinemalaya President Laurice Guillen.

LIKE last year’s celebration of Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, its 17th version will be held online.

This was announced yesterday by Cinemalaya President Laurice Guillen in an exclusive interview during the “Boy V’s Corner ” show in OpinYon Live Wednesday (June 2).

“Yes, we are again online this year,” disclosed Laurice in a candid yet warm mien. “The pandemic rendered us again in a digital mode.”

Like last year, one of the country’s trendsetting and the most popular if not the most awaited film festivals features ten short films in competition which defied the earlier announcement particularly by Jose Javier Reyes, Cinemalaya Monitoring Head, that the ten full-length movies officially selected last year and in 2021 would be screened together.

When the pandemic eases up, Laurice said, these twenty films will be shown in the 18th Cinemalaya along with the productions as culminating activities among outstanding workshoppers of the Ricky Lee free online scriptwriting which is on-going.

She added that the Cinemalaya Institute is also readying a webinar to be initiated by director Joey Reyes on filmmaking and television drama production inspired by Korean audio-visual expertise in collaboration with Korean multimedia artists.

The selection committee has already chosen the ten short films for the 2021 Cinemalaya, which are yet to be revealed, Laurice said.

The 17th Cinemalaya streams live on August 6, 2021.
