Chris Rock to have another comedy special with Netflix and will be the first show to be live streamed globally.
Chris Rock is set to host a real-time special for the streaming service platform Netflix as its first-ever global live- streamed event to happen in early 2023, the company announced on November 10.
The show will be Rock’s second stand-up special for Netflix after his “Chris Rock: Tamborine” which premiered in 2018, and also appeared at the streamer’s “Netflix Is a Joke” comedy festival earlier in 2022, appearing alongside Dave Chappelle.
This will be Rock’s seventh stand-up comedy special to date, having released five other specials in partnership with HBO throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
“Netflix Is a Joke” was a live event that took place last spring at 35 venues in Los Angeles which featured some 330 comedians in 295 shows across the area, including the first-ever stand-up show at Dodger Stadium, reported CNN.
The event sold more than 260,000 tickets, but none of those shows have been made available to stream live on its platform.
“Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” cited Netflix comedy vice president Robbie Praw in a statement.
“We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch.”
Wall Street Journal earlier reported that Netflix was looking into entering the sports market and introducing live matches on its platform for the first time to keep in step with rivals such as Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video which already offer such service including musical events.
According to Variety, Netflix has also looked into incorporating live streaming in some of its unscripted content which will give fans a chance to do live voting in survival shows.
