Aside from Garfield, Pratt’s voice works include Lego Movie, Onward, and the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie.

FOLLOWING the announcement that Chris Pratt will be voicing the iconic Mario in an upcoming movie, The Hollywood Reporter reveals the actor will also voice Garfield.

To be distributed by Sony Pictures, the new Garfield movie is being made by the duo behind The Emperor’s New Groove: writer David Reynolds (Finding Nemo) and director Mark Dindal (Chicken Little).

Originally a character in a comic strip by Jim Davis, Garfield has previously been adapted into live-action/ animated movies voiced by Bill Murray in the mid-2000s.

A few fans on Twitter have been calling for Sony to reconsider and recast Murray for the role.

Online criticisms have been following Pratt after Nintendo announced that the actor will be voicing Mario in the upcoming animated movie by Illumination.

Some fans argued they should have retained the voice actor for the Mario games, Charles Martinet, while some asked why an Italian actor wasn’t given the role.

Fans are worried that animated movie adaptations of popular pop culture icons would fall into the trap of casting A-list Hollywood actors with little to no voice acting experience.

Pratt assured fans on Instagram that he’s “working hard” at getting Mario’s voice right citing the role as a “dream come true”. He also teased that fans will “have to wait to hear the voice.”

The Super Mario movie is scheduled to release in late 2022 while Alcon Entertainment has not announced a release window for Garfield but is understood to still be in pre-production.
