After nearly two decades, Steve Burns finally gave some closure to those he left behind, and the older millennial fans who may have been caught off guard by his sudden departure from the beloved children’s show “Blue’s Clues.”
“I never forgot you, ever.”
For millenials who grew up in the 2000’s, no one could ever get the friendly green-striped polo wearing guy named Steve, who loves to sit in his red thinking chair along with his dog Blue.
The beloved animated educational series “Blue’s Clues” celebrated its 25th anniversary this week and a surprise video greeting from the original host Steve Burns got most viewers emotional.
On Tuesday (September 8), Burns finally gave some closure after 19 years since his last episode to those he left behind, and the older millennial fans who may have been caught off guard by his sudden departure.
"Hi, you got a second?" Burns, donning his original green striped polo, began in a viral clip posted to Nick Jr.'s Twitter account.
“You remember how when we were younger, we used to run around and hang out with Blue and find clues and talk to Mr. Salt and freak out about the mail and do all the fun stuff? And then one day, I was like, ‘Oh hey, guess what? Big news, I’m leaving. Here’s my brother Joe, he’s your new best friend.'"
In 2002, Burns abruptly left the show and was replaced by Donovan Patton, who played his “brother” Joe.
In 2019, the children’s show got a reboot as “Blue’s Clues and You,” featuring Filipino-American Josh dela Cruz stepping in as Steve’s and Joe’s “cousin.”
In the video, Burns addresses how his departure was "abrupt" and asked fans, "Can we talk about that?"
"I kinda got up and went to college and that was really challenging, by the way, but great," he said. "Because I got to use my mind and take a step at a time and now I literally am doing many of the things that I wanted to do."
In the 2.02-minute video, Burbs speaks about his departure from the show while reinforcing a positive tone to encourage fans to look at all the things they, just like him, have achieved since then.
To bring nostalgia and feels in his video, he wore the same shirt he used as a host during his time.
From “clues” to “student loans, jobs and families”, Burns closed his video with a heartfelt message to his millennial fans.
“I wanted to tell you that I really couldn’t have done all of that without your help and in fact, all the help that you helped me with when we were younger is still helping me today, right now. And that’s super cool,” he said. “I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years, I never forgot you. Ever.”
The video triggered nostalgia among many fans, who reposted several excerpts from the show featuring Burns. Some also shared the moment the actor bid his proper goodbye to the viewers.
