What the Urban Dictionary name trend means and what the craze is all about.

BEEN seeing a lot of your friends posting an Urban Dictionary meaning of their names lately? Here’s what the Urban Dictionary trend is all about.

Especially popular on Instagram, the trend went viral with people searching for the meaning of their names on the website’s glossary and posting screenshots of the idiosyncratic ‘definitions’ on social media.

The trend utilizes Instagram's popular "Add Yours" Story Sticker, and users can upload their own screenshots with the sticker on their Instagram story.

The trend began when Instagram user @bymayuuu posted the question “Show us ur name in Urban Dictionary” which went viral with more than two million people contributing to it.

For those not familiar with Urban Dictionary, it is a site that features definitions for both street and internet slang, or in many cases just a fun twist on words and names. Anyone can come up with the definitions, which is why they’re not taken seriously.

To look up your name on Urban Dictionary is a very simple process. All you have to do is type your name into the top search bar on the official website of Urban Dictionary’s website. Then, choose your correctly spelt name from the drop-down list and you will be taken to the page which defines your name. Depending upon the popularity of your name, you may find several definitions. Pick the one that best suits you.

Though not everyone is keen to participate in the trend, many took to Twitter questioning what the point is in taking part in the challenge. Some netizens even criticize the meaning they got for their names and labelling it as “complete nonsense”.

Urban Dictionary was founded in 1999 by Aaron Peckham as a crowdsourced dictionary for slang words. Over the last two decades, the site has grown to include definitions for just about anything.
