The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has posed a whole new challenge for advocates of clean, honest and trustworthy elections.
This is one of the reasons the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has decided to release new guidelines governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the 2025 elections.
In an impromptu interview Monday, September 2, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia revealed that the commission is currently finalizing the guidelines related to AI and deepfakes on social media.
“For the first time, Comelec will establish rules on AI use and the penalties for non-compliance or violations,” Garcia stated.
He emphasized the importance of these guidelines, noting that AI and deepfakes are expected to play a significant role in the 2025 campaign.
“Our goal is to ensure equal opportunity for all candidates,” Garcia added.
To further clarify these new regulations, COMELEC plans to hold another forum specifically for political parties.
Additionally, a task force launched in July is dedicated to safeguarding the election from AI-driven misinformation and disinformation by monitoring and regulating content across various media platforms, including TV, radio, print, and online.
