What is the significance of the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival?
First, it is celebrating its golden anniversary since it was relaunched by former president of the Philippines, Joseph Estrada.
“It was president Joseph Estrada who started it all,” informed actress Boots Anson Roa in her speech at the recently concluded announcement of the last five entries to the 50th MMFF.
But it was the late Manila Mayor Antonio J. Villegas who conceived and implemented the very first Manila Film Festival in the 1960s but when the former first lady Imelda R. Marcos gathered the cities of Makati, Caloocan, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Manila, Quezon, Marikina etc. and created Metro Manila Commission, Estrada established and jumpstarted the Metro Manila Film Festival covering towns and cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) during his tenure as mayor of San Juan in 1976.
Another importance of the 2024 MMFF is the innovative look of some of the films entered and chosen by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
One of them is the perennial box-office hitmaker Vic Sotto.
This year, Vic is wearing a new image but not totally departing from his comic role in the MQuest Ventures, M-Zet Productions and APT Entertainment’s “The Kingdom” where he plays a serious honcho opposite the peasant Piolo Pascual.
The other nine movies are mostly game-changing in the local entertainment industry.
Let’s see if they are really worth watching.
