1st QCinema Critics Lab opened to applicants

QCinema opens its first edition of Critics Lab where six aspiring film critics will experience hands-on guidance from the industry's finest including established writers, journalists, film scholars, curators, and film professionals.

On that note, QCinema tends to widen the knowledge and experience of film criticism in the country.

"The Critics Lab will be a space to expand and deepen the current practice of film criticism in the country towards alternative forms of film criticism (including but not limited to podcasts, video essays, long- form reporting, etc.) in the hopes of developing the great Filipino audience," QCinema wrote in their announcement.


"To help critics become equipped and independent after the festival, QCIFF will organiz up to six meetings with film, publishing, media professionals to enlighten them about the landscape of filmmaking and film criticism in and out of the country. These expert sessions will be part of the daily meet- up of the program and will be exclusive to those involved in the QCinema Critics Lab."


Eligible participants shall be a Filipino citizen, 18 to 30 years old and Filipino resident. Applicants shall be able to participate in English and Filipino, with the interest in Film and Film Criticism.


Interested participants shall review any of the Filipino short films including, Martika Ramirez Escobar's Quadrilaterals; Roxlee's Juan Gapang and Xeph Suarez's Si Astri Maka si Tambulah.


The applicants shall submit the application form, recommendation from a prior employer or professor, and link of published Film Critique output.


Moreover, the QCinema shoulder accommodations, travel allowance, and per diem, including Festival accreditation that allows them all access to the screenings and events throughout the festival duration.


Thus, among six participants, two of them will receive Alexis Tioseco and Nika Bohinc Award for Film Criticism.
