Batanguenos are urged to protect themselves against extreme heat as temperatures reaching “danger” levels were recorded by meteorologists in the province in the past few days.
BATANGAS CITY – Batanguenos are warned of extreme temperatures as heat indexes reaching “danger” levels were observed by the state weather bureau last week in Barangay Ambulong this city.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) recorded the scorching weather at a high of 42 degrees centigrade from Barangay Ambulong in Batangas City even as during that day Sangley Point in Cavite also registered a maximum heat index of 46 °C while Tayabas City, Quezon Province had it at 37 °C.
Scores have complained about the prevailing extremely hot weather in the past few days.
But Pagasa said the highest heat index was recorded in Dagupan City, Pangasinan with a maximum of 51°C on May 8, 2021.
The heat index is the temperature that the body feels or the apparent temperature that gives the human body comfort.
Because of the prevailing scorching weather, the Department of Health (DOH) – Calabarzon Regional Director Dr. Eduardo Janairo cautioned everyone in the region to take the necessary precautions.
“I urge everyone to take extreme caution as the hot temperature may continue during this summer,” Janairo said.
He also urged residents to stay inside to avoid sunburns, heat cramps, or worse, suffer heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
“People oftentimes underestimate the effects of the summer heat on their health but too much exposure from the sun can cause serious heat-related illnesses,” Janairo added.
“It is best to stay at home or indoors dahil hindi lang Covid ang dapat nating iwasan ngayon kasama na rin dito ang sobrang init ng panahon na nararanasan natin. Hangga’t maari ay iwasan nating lumabas ng bahay mula alas-9 ng umaga hanggang alas-3 ng hapon dahil ito ang pinakamainit na oras na makakapagdulot ng masamang epekto sa ating kalusugan,” he emphasized.
Janairo added that when you are at home, stay in the coolest part of the house and when you are outdoor, stay in the shade away from direct sunlight and wear light-colored clothing to reflect the heat.
“Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep your body cool,” he said.
