In the wake of a fierce encounter between soldiers and New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Balayan, Batangas, questions arise regarding the rebels' sincerity in engaging in peace talks with which the Marcos administration recently signed in Norway with representatives of the rebels, leading to the reopening the stalled peace talks the previous regime abruptly canceled citing “sincerity” as the cause.

The skirmish lasted for over four hours on December 17 leaving seven (7) casualties and three (3) wounded.

The intense and bloody firefight unfolded during an operation in Barangay Malalay after the army received a tip regarding the rebels’ renewed activity in the area.

Reports suggest that the clash occurred as the military conducted operations in Barangay Malalay, where government forces crossed paths with armed individuals affiliated with the SPP Kawing from the Sub-Regional Military Area 4C of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

As we wrote this editorial piece last week, the military was still at it, conducting a follow-up operation to apprehend the escaping rebels. Checkpoints were also established.

Major General Roberto S. Capulong, Commander of the 2nd Infantry "Jungle Fighter" Division, commended the sacrifices of the soldiers, emphasizing that such incidents strengthen their commitment to safeguard communities against the dangers of terrorism, especially during the festive Christmas season.

In a call to the remaining rebels, Gen. Capulong reminded them to seize the opportunity for peace, surrender, and embrace the government's peace initiatives. He urged them to reunite with their families and loved ones this Christmas by laying down their arms.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this violent clash, doubts linger regarding the rebels' true intentions and commitment to peaceful dialogue.

The juxtaposition of engaging in peace talks while orchestrating attacks raises questions about the sincerity of the rebels and their willingness to pursue a peaceful resolution to the longstanding conflict.
