THAT refers to the Trash to Cash program of one local government unit here in the province of Batangas.
We were wrong to think it would only last for one day, when it was launched this year although we already wrote it here before as it was really worthy of emulation to other LGUs in the province and elsewhere.
Why? Because this project or program hits “many birds” with one stone: (1) the project poses to eradicate the litter or trash from clogging waterways, (2) prevents environmental pollution, (3) it stimulates people to dispose their trash properly, (4) encourages trash segregation, and (5) allows people to earn cash from their trash.
It’s Lipa City’s Trash to Cash project.
The long and short of it says that people only need to turnover their trash (properly segregated) to designated areas by the City ENRO (Environment and Natural Resources Office) for weighing, by which a corresponding point is earned depending on what kind of recyclable material was presented.
The more trash one brings, the more points he or she will earn, as such it became some sort of a huge Xmas Party gathering on redemption day of points garnered last Thursday (09 Disyembre 2021) at the city’s Claro M. Recto Events Center.
And would you believe, the City ENRO and other participating offices distributed a total of 1,153 appliances and gadgets, and would you believe, a laptop, all from trash mind you.
Here is the breakdown:
247 - Electric Kettles
178 - Desk Fans
111 - Stand Fans
96 - Flat Irons
104 - Single Burner Stove
106 - Oven Toasters
153 - Double Burner Stoves
121 - Rice Cookers
25 - Microwave Ovens
7 - Washing Machines
1 - (4) Seater Dining Table
3 – Printers and
1 – Laptop
See? That’s for real.
As such, we doff our hats to this project and we hope other LGUs, and perhaps, even the DENR, should feel inspired enough to toe the line to this noblest of causes in helping Mother Nature.
