Cuenca, a quaint town in Batangas, boldly declared itself the "Home of Bakers" during its 147th founding anniversary celebration, carving a unique identity rooted in the art of bread-making. Mayor Alex Magpantay, a seasoned baker, spearheads this initiative, making Cuenca the sole town in the Philippines to center its anniversary festivities around the cherished craft.

The week-long celebration, themed "Tinapay ay daan tungo sa maunlad na bayan kaya’t ipagdiwang pagka’t ito’y isang karangalan" (Bread paves the way for municipal progress, so let us celebrate it because it brings us honor), not only reflects the town's dedication but also serves as an educational platform. Baking seminars, in collaboration with industry suppliers, aim to enhance the skills of local bakers, equipping them for success in a dynamic industry overshadowed by mass production.

A pivotal event, the Baker's Marketplace Display, showcases delights from Batangueño-owned bakeries, inviting both locals and tourists to savor the town's unique baking culture. This not only supports local businesses but also reinforces Cuenca's commitment to preserving its culinary heritage.

Lucito Chavez, president of the Asosasyon ng Panaderong Pilipino (APP), underscores the challenge from large multinational bakeries and advocates for local bakers to receive training in research, development, and business management. He points to the recognition of Filipino bakery products, such as pandesal, in the United States, highlighting the potential for global market expansion.

Chavez's call for support from local and national government levels resonates as a plea for the survival and growth of the Philippine baking industry. The APP, with roots in Cuenca and businesses in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, actively champions this cause.

Finally, Cuenca's pursuit of being the "Home of Bakers" transcends mere celebration; it's a strategic move to empower its people, preserve its cultural identity, and contribute to the nation's economic growth.

In applauding Cuenca's efforts, let it serve as inspiration for other communities to embrace and celebrate their unique crafts, for in these traditions lies the essence of our shared heritage.

Meanwhile, another town in Batangas, San Jose, has officially been declared “Egg Capital/Basket” of the Philippines in April last year. We never know Cuenca might also be declared as PH’s “Home of Bakers” by Congress.
