Batangas State U tops Isang Bituin, Isang Mithiin Year 2: National Parol Making Contest; romps with P1-M cash prize

STO TOMAS City, Batangas – Take a bow at Batangas State University, you made all Batanguenos proud this Christmas.

Out of 86 entries from various State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) nationwide, Batangas State University, considered the country's National Engineering University, flattened the field and emerged as champion in the Isang Bituin, Isang Mithiin Year 2: National Parol Making Competition during the awarding ceremony last Saturday (25 Nov 2023) in Malacanang.

Organized by the Office of the President (OP), and Social Secretary's Office, in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the nationwide parol-making contest aims to inspire creativity, unity, and hope among Filipino youth, symbolizing the enduring spirit of the Philippines.

BatStateU's College of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design (CAFAD) students crafted the winning lantern,'KAPE-ling sa Kapaskuhan,' under the supervision of Dr Luther Eroa, head of the Culture and Arts Office, BatStateU Alangilan.

This vibrant representation of shared cultures and futures stood out with its unique design, using locally sourced materials from Batangas' public market.

Symbolizing the journey of Red Spartans, the lantern beautifully conveys the essence of embracing life's simple pleasures amidst relentless pursuits.

Crafted with meticulous attention, this lantern tells a story through its four distinct elements – the Gear, the Large Star, the Small Star, and the Tail – each representing a significant aspect of BatStateU's identity and cultural heritage.

The rotating gear symbolizes innovation and synergy, echoing the University's legacy of pioneering advancements in Engineering.

The big star pays homage to cherished cultural landmarks, while the small star glorifies Batangas' vibrant heritage.

Notably, the tail reveres Batangas' treasures and traditions, including the Verde Island Passage and the iconic "Loming Batangas” dish.

Together with the University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, CAFAD students, including Bernadette Bagsit, Allan Harlem Lei Novelo, Lhanz Andrei Balmes, and Marc Joseph Vergara, received the esteemed recognition in Malacañang during the Awarding Ceremony and Christmas Tree Lighting with the presence of President Ferdinand "Bong Bong" Marcos Jr. and First Lady, Liza Araneta Marcos.

The University was given a Photo and Video Editing Package as part of the top 3 winners.

At the same time, the students were awarded a cash prize of One Million Pesos (P1,000,000,000) and a showcase of mobile phones and laptops.

The parol-making competition was generously sponsored by PAGCOR and PCSO.
