By switching to lab-made diamonds, jewelry maker Pandora is clearly setting its sights towards a more “sustainable” fashion trend and is hoping to combat climate change and other environmental issues, by setting an example for other luxury jewelry giants to follow.

PANDORA, the world’s largest producer of jewelry, has announced a huge change in its operations by saying it would not be using mined diamonds on its products anymore.

The Copenhagen-based company said that it will now be using diamonds created in laboratories, saying they have the same “optical, chemical, thermal, and physical properties” than those found in mines.

They hope to launch the new collection, called Pandora Brilliance, in the United Kingdom first before launching it globally next year.

CEO Alexander Lacik said the move aims to solidify their sustainability agenda to make diamonds accessible to more people.

Lab-made stones are becoming more popular nowadays, and they’ve been billed as the more ethical and traceable alternative to mined diamonds.

Pandora shares that they’re graded the same way, with “4Cs:” cut, color, clarity, and carat, before being sold to the public.

Aside from choosing to forgo mining, the company’s new collection is also more environmentally friendly, as they are made with over 60 percent renewable energy.

By the time it launches globally, the company expects that the diamonds will be made with 100 percent renewable energy.

On top of this, Pandora announced that it will only be using recycled gold and silver in its products by 2025.

This makes Pandora a key player in the world’s collective effort in hoping to combat climate change and other environmental issues, and they are setting a great example for other luxury jewelry giants to follow suit.

Their environmentally friendly initiatives make their products all the more enticing for consumers, as compared to their competitors who may offer similar styles and quality of products, but do not have the same competitive edge of being environmentally sustainable. (MO)
