What many people admire the most about Naomi Osaka is how she uses her platform, the spotlight on her and her voice, to raise awareness about social justice.

Mattel released a Naomi Osaka Barbie doll on Monday as part of the brand’s Barbie Role Models doll line showcasing inspiring women from around the world.

“I hope every child is reminded that they can be and do anything,” Tweeted the four-time Grand Slam tennis champion, shortly after the release and before the doll sold out online.

Osaka’s doll is designed by Carlyle Nuera and includes her Nike tennis dress the athlete wore on the 2020 Australian Open, Nike shoes, a visor, and a Yonnex tennis racket.

“What I personally admire the most about Naomi Osaka is how she uses her platform, the spotlight on her and her voice, to raise awareness about social justice,” Nuera said in a press release.

Mattel and Osaka first teamed up in 2019 when Barbie celebrated 60 years by releasing a new lineup for the Shero line modeled after 20 inspiring women around the world.

Apart from her impact on the court, Osaka has been vocal on the Black Lives Matter movement and mental health issues that promted her to withdraw from the French Open in May.

She recently wrote a Time essay titled “It’s O.K. Not To Be O.K.” about how the press conferences on tournaments need to change and saying, “Athletes are humans.”

Osaka also later withdrew from this year’s Wimbledon but is expected to come back to the court to represent Japan at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

A Netflix Documentary Series is also set to air this week following Osaka’s life and struggles after becoming an “overnight superstar” after winning the 2018 US Open.

"The series is about Naomi's journey, within a snapshot of her life," director Garrett Bradley. "But it's also about life's purpose, about personal worth, about the courage that it takes to allow one's personal values to inform their work and vice versa.”

The three-part documentary will air on July 16th.
