When Mr. Ray called to offer pundit space in Opinyon Metro, I immediately jumped at the offer. There are many things brewing in the utilities front and issues will not run out. The political pot boils anew, with viciousness growing by the day. Government watch and government catch are becoming the new fashion. And social media being what it is, no curious eye will want for catchy angles.  That’s materials galore so, go!

Part One

Meralco must be in a celebratory mode these days. Congress gifted it with a new franchise with no forthright and honest review of the old. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has bent and twisted to its will, rewriting ERC’s rules to suit Meralco’s convenience. The Palace and Congress are neck-deep in divisive politics; no one in power and authority is looking out for Meralco’s captive customers.

This week we digress from our franchise narrative.  Meralco has filed two (2) rehashed rate applications. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has set them for hearing on February 28 and March 3. We have to weigh in.
