Anti-drug authorities in Region 8 urge companies to craft "drug-free" policies

AFTER a series of successful buy- bust operations that resulted in the arrests of high -value targets from government offices earlier this year, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Authority (PDEA) is now urging private companies to ensure that their workers are free from the influence of illicit drugs and drug rings.

In an interview, Atty. Jayson Matoza, legal officer of PDEA-Region 8, said that private companies are now required to ensure that employees they are hiring are not using illegal substance or do not have connectionswith any illegal drugs rings.

This is in line with their project called "Drug Free Workplace Policy" which aims to provide a safe and effective drug-free workplaces.

With the new policies, the government and the private sector in the region would be able to play their part in the campaign against illegal drugs.

PDEA believes the move will also ensure the worker’s safety and productivity.

Matoza also noted that for employees who admit to drug use prior to testing may receive interventions which include rehabilitation or enrolment in the wellness programs of SALAG, a rehabilitation facility in Dulag, Leyte.

To recall, the last two months of intensified entrapment operations of PDEA- 8 and Anti-Illegal Drugs Unit of PNP- 8 have resulted in the arrests of suspected high -value targets that include, among others, public school teachers, government workers and elected officials.(JKA)
